We went to Bordeaux in the latter part of March and the first part of April. To say the weather was terrible would be an understatement, but that turned out to be just one of our concerns. More than the cold and rain, however, was the anticipation of tasting the highly touted 2009s. Would 2009 Bordeaux live up to all this hoop-la? We would soon find out.

We have a lot of experience tasting barrel samples and judging young wines. We have a pretty good idea what to look for and we have a good feeling of how these wines will evolve. We've been proven correct more times than not, in going back and tasting the same wines with some age, and also, with the scores given the wines by others. One thing we must always remember to do is to put aside our prejudices and personal feelings. This came to light on this trip. There is one wine I have never liked, but tasting it in this vintage completely changed my mind. This year it was delicious. It was Chateau Montrose.

Now, on to the 2009s. We tasted at the UGC, at many of the chateaux, and in the offices of several of our negociants, all non-blind. We tasted from the first growths all the way down to the Petit Bordeaux. We came to the conclusion that it was a vintage with a lot of variances. If a chateau owner didn't invest in the eventual outcome, right from the beginning, in the vineyard, he ended up with a mess. This vintage required a lot of work. There were some stunning examples of well-made wines and there were some dismal failures. This seemed to be a Cabernet vintage more than a Merlot vintage. We tasted some brilliant wines from St. Emilion and Pomerol (Clinet!!), but the wines of the Medoc seemed to outshine them. Looking back over my notes, I had higher scores for left bank wines than I did for right bank wines. All the famous names scored extremely well, but even so, there were some right bank wines that I thought had done better in the past than they did in 2009.

The good wines, both right bank and left bank, all had ample fruit and the tannin count was exceedingly high. The alcohol levels were up there, too, but in the end, the wines tasted balanced and structured. The tannins turned out to be soft and ripe and the wines scored higher than the last three previous vintages, and surprisingly, many scored higher than the famous 2005s. This wasn't an "across the board" outstanding vintage like 2005, but it will be considered a great vintage.

We bought what we could, based on what was offered to us. All our purchases are first tranche and all the wines scored at least a 90. The only problem is that there just isn't a lot of them and there are some noticable gaps. We did not get any Chateau Clinet (one of my favorites), nor any Chateau Latour. All in all, I think we have a good selection and I know that, through first hand experience, we should be able to answer all your questions. As to finding you more wine, that may be a little more difficult. The 2009s should arrive in the spring/summer of 2012.
